Student Support Pantry
Food insecurity is prevalent on college campuses in the United States and abroad. In response, the Wisconsin HOPE Lab conducted the largest national survey assessing the basic needs of security of 43,000 university students. This study revealed that 36% of university students were food insecure in the 30 days preceding the survey. While there are no studies that assess Mississippi students only, advocates within the state are working to ensure that every student has access to food and other valuable student resources. Once such advocate, The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi (The Partnership), formed The College and University Anti-Hunger Alliance of Mississippi (The Alliance).
The Alliance consists of like-minded organizations, community leaders, and other individuals who are interested in eradicating hunger on Mississippi’s higher education campuses, including two-year and four-year colleges and universities. In 2018, Tougaloo College joined The Alliance to better fortify our dedication to academic achievement, with the creation of the Student Support Pantry in 2019. In addition to providing food to our student, we also provide personal hygiene items and laundry and school supplies through our Tougaloo Cares initiative.
Throughout the year, we conduct campus-wide drives to stock the pantry. Our enthusiastic faculty, staff, community members, and various donors help to ensure that we are able to provide needed items to our students. Our most recent donation of $15,000 from the Kroger Company – Zero Hunger, Zero Waste Initiative helps to ensure that we are able to continue to provide this needed service.
Currently enrolled Tougaloo College students are eligible to receive pantry items at no cost to the student. The Student Support Pantry is located in the Owens Health and Wellness Center. Contact the OHWC at 601-977-6137 to register for the Student Support Pantry service (Tougaloo College students only) or to provide a donation.
