A Hub for Advocacy, Law, and Social Justice
The Department of Political Science stands as a beacon of truth, justice, and public service. Grounded in a commitment to community-empowered research, civic leadership, and policy advocacy that advances equity for Black and historically underserved communities across Mississippi and the nation, we prepare scholars to engage in transformative leadership, shaping public policy, advancing social justice, and fostering a more just and equitable society.
The paragon of rigorous academic exploration, abstract policy training, and collaborative action are the tenets the Department embodies as a reflection of Tougaloo's legacy as a cradle for the Civil Rights Movement, thus cultivating leaders who carry forward the struggle for justice, equity, and freedom.
Vision Statement
The Political Science Department envisions a dynamic community of scholars, leaders, and advocates committed to promoting social justice, advancing political knowledge, and transforming society through engaged citizenship and informed activism.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to advance a scholarly milieu that prioritizes intellectual rigor, ethical inquiry, and a comprehensive grasp of political systems and governance. Anchored in interdisciplinary pedagogy, praxis-oriented scholarship, and civic-engaged frameworks, the program is designed to develop critically informed scholars capable of deconstructing complex socio-political phenomena, addressing systemic inequities, and contributing to the amelioration of a society that reflects the greatest ideals of democracy.
