Richard McGinnis Summer Science and Engineering Program

Celebrating Over 50 Years of Inspiring Future Scientists and Engineers

A Legacy of Excellence in STEM Education

Founded in 1969 by the late Dr. Richard McGinnis—beloved professor, mentor, and former Dean of the School of Natural Sciences—the Summer Science and Engineering Program is one of Tougaloo College's longest-running academic traditions. For more than five decades, this month-long residential program has introduced high-achieving high school seniors to the rigor, community, and possibilities of college life and STEM education.

Participants live on campus, take college-level courses in disciplines such as General Chemistry I, General Biology I, General Physics I, and Introduction to Computer Science and Coding, and engage in weekend activities designed to foster personal growth, collaboration, and lifelong friendships. The experience culminates in a capstone project presentation and a guided college tour of a major research university, exposing students to advanced academic and career pathways.

Each summer adds a new chapter to the program's rich history, reinforcing its reputation as a transformative experience that prepares students for the academic challenges of college and the opportunities that follow.

Dr. Richard McGinnis

The program honors the legacy of Dr. Richard McGinnis, whose vision created a pathway for countless students to discover their potential in science and engineering.

As a beloved professor and Dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Dr. McGinnis understood that early exposure to rigorous STEM education could transform lives and communities.

His commitment to excellence continues to inspire every cohort of summer scholars.
