Committee on Homeland Security Hearing about immigration raids to be held at Tougaloo College

Tougaloo College students have the opportunity to witness government in action when Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, returns to his alma mater to hold a field hearing on Mississippi immigration raids. Students, the community and media are invited to the Tougaloo College Holmes Hall Auditorium at 10 AM CST to hear experts and local leaders share the impact on children and families resulting from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement workplace raids that occurred in Mississippi on August 7, 2019.

"Three months later, we still don't have a proper explanation of why the federal government planned and executed these raids without accounting for the impact on children, families, and the community. Because of this negligence, dozens of children went home after their first day of school to find that one or both of their parents were nowhere to be found," said Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security. Oversight of this magnitude should not be ignored by Congress. "This hearing will be an opportunity to hear directly from our communities on how the Administration's immigration policies have impacted them."

The information presented during this hearing should be a reminder that every human is impacted by the US government. Not only is it important for all citizens, young and old, to realize their civic duty to remain aware of government processes and practices, but to become involved in an effort to make positive change and share perspectives that may not always be popular.

"Being informed is the first step to affecting change and positively impacting our communities," said Thompson, who is honored to provide Tougaloo students with this opportunity. "They can expect a deep dive into the work our committee is doing to address some of the toughest issues our country is currently facing. This hearing will be an opportunity to hear directly from our communities on how the Administration's immigration policies have impacted them. Immigration policy is a serious issue that impacts our communities in Mississippi and across the country.
