The College Counselor administers the delivery of mental health care services to students. Assists with the overall coordination and management of outreach programming for the institute community. The College Counselor works in the Department of Student Affairs and reports to the Director of Counseling Services. The position will require a flexible work schedule.
Assists with the planning, development, and delivery of a range of psycho-educational outreach and in-service training programs/workshops to student peer leaders ( resident assistants, sophomore advisors, , Greek leaders); academic advisors; and the campus community through the Wellness Speaker Series; Develops, organizes, and promotes outreach programming for the campus community; Works in collaboration with individuals and groups from around the campus community to develop programming to best meet their needs; Engages in outreach activities with multicultural groups intended to promote increased access to services; Responsible for strengthening outreach connections and coordinating student support with diversity partners; Coordinates and organizes the evaluation of all Tougaloo outreach programming; Assists with training and day-to-day operation of the Student Counseling Center; Provides the following services to students in a professional and clinical atmosphere: individual, couples, and group counseling within the context of empirically based treatment interventions and an ethical framework; consultation regarding student mental health issues and crisis intervention; student referrals to off-campus facilities for counseling and testing as needed; conducts emergency assessments and facilitates hospital psychiatric admissions of high risk students; provides followup on all counseling referrals; and maintains timely and accurate confidential student records according to ethics codes, Mississippi law, and best practice models; Interest and experience in multiculturalism, social justice, and working with diverse student populations including culturally marginalized, oppressed and underrepresented groups; Works collaboratively with individual students, faculty and staff and provides community intervention for departments and student organizations within the Institute while developing a strong network system; Engages in professional activities at local, regional and national levels; remains current on issues within the mental health field; maintains ongoing relationships with community resources; Participates on campus committees or initiatives at the request of the Director of Counseling Services; Participates in other duties as assigned by or with the approval of the Director of Counseling Services.
Ph.D, Psy .D., or M.S. in counseling or clinical psychology required; minimum of three years of counseling experience preferred; professional counseling experience working with college students in a campus environment strongly desired; strong understanding of mental health care in higher education and familiarity with diagnoses that commonly affect college students; preferred skills in, but not limited to: counseling, ADA compliance, assessment and campus-wide outreach services; knowledge of student development issues as it relates to college students desired. Education may be substituted for years of experience.
