Course Requirements

 

The Bachelor of Arts in History Education offers a comprehensive curriculum that blends deep content knowledge with practical classroom experience. Students are guided through historical analysis, global perspectives, and culturally responsive pedagogy—while meeting all requirements for teacher licensure in Mississippi. The program culminates in a student teaching practicum that ensures graduates are classroom-ready.

 

Course Descriptions: Bachelor of Arts in History Education

The B.A. in History Education is designed to prepare students for careers in secondary education. The program combines rigorous training in history with a full sequence of education courses and a student teaching practicum. Students gain both subject expertise and pedagogical skills aligned with state licensure requirements.

Required Education Courses (24 Credit Hours)

Introduces students to various exceptionalities and educational needs. Emphasis on special education law, assessment, and classroom accommodations. Includes a required practicum.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Examines strategies and theories for managing student behavior in diverse classroom settings. Includes the development of a behavior management project. Practicum required.
Prerequisite: EDE 101
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Focuses on assessment techniques, test design, data interpretation, and the use of technology in evaluating student learning outcomes.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
A fifteen-week practicum under the guidance of a certified cooperating teacher and college supervisor. Includes seminar meetings and performance assessments aligned with national teaching standards.
CREDIT: FIFTEEN SEMESTER HOURS
 

History Area of Concentration (36 Credit Hours)

In addition to the standard history major requirements, students pursuing the B.A. in History Education must complete the following history courses:

Covers the foundational events and movements in American history through the Civil War.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Explores American history from Reconstruction to the present, including industrialization and civil rights.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Surveys ancient civilizations and key global developments up to the 16th century.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Continues from the early modern period to the contemporary world, with emphasis on revolutions and modern global systems.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Students may take either Part I (pre-Civil War) or Part II (post-Civil War to present) to satisfy this requirement.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
In-depth study of selected periods or themes in U.S. history. Topics vary by semester and instructor.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Examines major European developments such as the Enlightenment, revolutions, or totalitarian regimes, depending on semester focus.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Studies the unique cultural, political, and economic history of Mississippi and the broader Southern region. Satisfies state certification requirement.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Topics may include pre-colonial societies, colonial resistance, and post-independence African states.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Required capstone course for all history majors. Includes a major research paper and oral presentation.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Total: 60 credit hours (36 in History, 24 in Education)
