Course Descriptions

The History curriculum at Tougaloo College is designed to provide students with a broad, inclusive, and critical understanding of the human past. Our courses explore diverse perspectives, challenge dominant narratives, and equip students with analytical and research skills applicable across professions. Whether pursuing an Associate of Arts or a Bachelor of Arts, students will engage with U.S., World, and African American histories through a rigorous and thought-provoking sequence of courses. Each pathway prepares graduates to think historically, act ethically, and lead with informed purpose in a global society.

Course Descriptions: Associate of Arts in History

The Associate of Arts in History is designed for high school students to earn college credits through dual enrollment. Students must complete 66 credit hours with a "C" or better. 30 of these hours are within the History program, and 36 hours are general education requirements.

Required History Courses (18 Credit Hours)

A survey of American History from colonial origins through Reconstruction. Emphasis on foundational events such as the Revolutionary War, the Constitution, and post-Civil War challenges.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Covers late 19th century to 20th century American history, including industrialization, reform movements, and the rise of the U.S. as a global power.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Surveys major political, social, and economic developments in the modern Western world, from early modern times to the present.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Explores African American history from African origins through the Civil War. Topics include the transatlantic slave trade, antebellum life, and abolitionist movements.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Examines African American experiences from Reconstruction through the 20th century, including Jim Crow, migration, civil rights, and modern resistance movements.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Investigates the Southern Civil Rights Movement from WWII to 1966, focusing on key figures, events, and philosophies of resistance and social change.

Introduces demand and supply, national income, inflation, fiscal and monetary policy, and macroeconomic theory.

Covers microeconomic concepts such as consumer behavior, market structures, and production theory.

Examines early civilizations, including Africa, Greece, and Rome, and the development of Western society through the Renaissance.

A cultural and musical exploration of jazz history, including key musicians, styles, and social impact.

A foundational course on the structure, powers, and functions of the U.S. government, including civil rights and political institutions.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Introduces behavioral principles, brain function, development, memory, cognition, and learning.
Prerequisite: ENG 101

Covers foundational sociological concepts, American social structure, and recent societal changes.

Studies human cultures and societies, social behavior, and the intersection of culture and personality.

Course Descriptions: Bachelor of Arts in History

The Bachelor of Arts in History degree consists of 36 credit hours in history and prepares students for graduate study, public service, education, law, and a variety of careers in research and public history. Core requirements include U.S., World, and African American history, along with historiography and a senior seminar.

Surveys American history from colonial foundations through Reconstruction. Covers political, social, and economic developments.

Continues from the late 19th century through the modern era. Focus on industrialization, social movements, and U.S. global influence.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Covers early civilizations through the Renaissance and Reformation, emphasizing Africa, Greece, Rome, and medieval Europe.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Focuses on early modern to contemporary global developments including revolutions, empires, and globalization.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Explores the African American experience from African origins to the Civil War, emphasizing slavery, resistance, and community building.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
Covers the African American experience from Reconstruction to the present, including civil rights, migration, and cultural contributions.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS
A junior-level course examining how historians write history, different schools of thought, and major developments in historiography. Includes beginning the senior thesis.
CREDIT: THREE SEMESTER HOURS Offered Spring semester, once per year
Capstone seminar involving independent research and the writing of a major paper. Emphasis on synthesizing historical knowledge and methodology.

Additional History Electives (12 Credit Hours)

Students must complete four additional history courses. These may include upper-level topics in American, European, African, or African American history.

Recommended Support Electives

Students are encouraged to take electives in Political Science, Sociology, Economics, or Psychology to complement their history coursework and prepare for interdisciplinary research and graduate study.
