Biomedical Research & Innovation Scholars Program

The Biomedical Research & Innovation Scholars Program amplifies the impact of the new Tougaloo College Biomedical Research & Training Center (BRTC). Scholars develop solutions at the intersection of biomedical science, technology, and public policy, with a particular focus on chronic diseases and health inequities in regions like the Mississippi Delta.

Key elements: innovation incubator and entrepreneurship catalyst; applied research using AI/ML to analyze and address health disparities; a scholarship fund that supports talented students committed to advancing health equity through research and innovation.

Robert L. Smith Center of Excellence for Rural & Community Health

The Robert L. Smith Center of Excellence for Rural and Community Health will serve as a transformative hub for research, workforce development, and community-based innovation focused on reducing health disparities in rural Mississippi and the Deep South.

Key elements: unifies Tougaloo’s longstanding health-equity work—including the Jackson Heart Study, Delta Health Partners, and the Central Mississippi AHEC—into a permanent, data-driven center that leverages community partnerships, federal awards, and student pipelines to advance equitable care.

Cardiovascular Research & Training

Jackson Heart Study Training & Education Center (UTEC)

As the Undergraduate Training and Education Center (UTEC) for the Jackson Heart Study, Tougaloo College prepares high school and undergraduate students to become the next generation of biomedical and public health researchers focused on cardiovascular disease in African-American communities.

Key elements: intensive academic enrichment and research experiences through the SLAM Program (for high school students) and the Scholars Program (for undergraduates); hands-on training with leading researchers; targeted support for graduate and professional school preparation.

Tougaloo College Cybersecurity Clinic

The Tougaloo College Cybersecurity Clinic provides pro bono cybersecurity risk reviews, audits, and awareness training to campus units and community partners—churches, healthcare entities, nonprofits, schools, and small businesses—while preparing students to defend organizations from cyber-attacks.

Key elements: powered by Google and the Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics; structured assessments and actionable recommendations for under-resourced organizations; hands-on training and stipended internship opportunities that build a diverse cybersecurity workforce in Mississippi.

Brown–Tougaloo Partnership

Brown–Tougaloo Partnership

Established in 1964, the Brown–Tougaloo Partnership is one of the most enduring collaborations between an HBCU and an Ivy League institution. It creates pathways for academic exchange, research, and cultural understanding that expand opportunity for Tougaloo students and faculty.

Key elements: semester and yearlong student exchanges; summer research and leadership programs; faculty exchanges and joint research; graduate and professional school preparation that connects Tougaloo students to world-class academic and professional networks.
