A pioneering collaboration between Tougaloo College and Brown University that has advanced academic exchange, cultural understanding, and educational equity for more than six decades.
A Historic Academic Partnership

About the Brown–Tougaloo Partnership

The Brown–Tougaloo Partnership represents one of the most significant and enduring collaborations between historically Black and predominantly white institutions in American higher education. Since 1964, this groundbreaking partnership has opened doors for academic exchange, cultural understanding, and educational excellence.

This unique relationship allows Tougaloo College students to experience the academic rigor and resources of an Ivy League institution while maintaining their connection to the rich heritage and community of their home campus. The partnership has served as a model for inter-institutional collaboration and continues to break barriers in higher education.

Formalized during the Civil Rights era, the Brown University– Tougaloo College Partnership (BTP) was created to enrich both campuses through student, faculty, and administrative exchanges. In the 60+ years since its creation, more than 500–600 individuals have participated in programs and projects that reflect shared commitments to service, scholarship, and justice.

The Advisory Council on Relations with Tougaloo College

The Advisory Council on Relations with Tougaloo College is the principal governance body of the partnership. Composed of up to 15 members appointed by the President of Brown University, the Council guides long-term policy, strategic direction, and implementation of the relationship between Brown and Tougaloo.
