Biomedical Research & Innovation Scholars Program
The Biomedical Research & Innovation Scholars Program is a strategic investment that amplifies the mission of the Tougaloo College Biomedical Research & Training Center (BRTC). This two-pronged initiative advances biomedical research inquiry while cultivating innovation and entrepreneurship as tools for transforming health outcomes—particularly in regions like the Mississippi Delta, where chronic diseases and structural inequities remain prevalent.
Embedded in an interdisciplinary framework that bridges biomedical sciences, technology, and public policy, the program equips scholars to design, test, and implement solutions to complex public health challenges. Students gain hands-on research experience, mentorship from faculty and external partners, and the entrepreneurial skills necessary to bring novel ideas to scale.
Innovation, Applied Research & Community Impact
The Scholars Program is anchored by two mutually reinforcing pillars: an Innovation Incubator and Entrepreneurship Catalyst, and a robust Applied Research and Community Impact component. Together, these pillars move ideas from conceptual frameworks to empirically grounded interventions in communities that bear the brunt of chronic disease and structural inequities.
Innovation Incubator & Entrepreneurship Catalyst
The proposed incubator will serve as an intellectual and practical nexus for cultivating creative and entrepreneurial capacities among student scholars. The program, embedded within an interdisciplinary framework that bridges biomedical sciences, technology, and public policy, will empower participants to conceptualize and implement innovative responses to pressing public health challenges, including diabetes, hypertension, and obesity—conditions intensely mediated by social determinants of health.
- Scholars will participate in workshops, mentorships, and prototype development labs that foster applied learning and knowledge.
- Collaborative projects will translate scientific insights into scalable health innovations.
- Partnerships with industry and community organizations will accelerate the commercialization and real-world application of these technologies.
Applied Research & Community Impact
A concurrent applied research component will immerse students in faculty-mentored studies leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to analyze, predict, and mitigate health disparities. The emphasis will rest on integrating theoretical constructs with data-driven implementation that allows for the translation of conceptual frameworks into empirically grounded interventions that advance equity in health outcomes:
- Research teams will analyze disease prevalence, social conditions, and policy implications across communities analogous to the Mississippi Delta; thus, the region becomes a critical case study for understanding the intersection of health inequities and structural determinants.
- Data-driven insights will inform community programs and public policies aimed at promoting health equity.
- Scholars will publish and present outcomes that serve as the impetus to building a culture of scholarly excellence and institutional impact in communities disproportionately impacted.
Biomedical Research Scholarship Fund
The Biomedical Research Scholarship Fund will support students who are not only meritorious but also deeply motivated to use research as an impetus for change, to mitigate adverse health outcomes, and empower vulnerable populations with the resources and knowledge to shape their own destinies. These scholars will embody the spirit of innovation and applied inquiry that defines Tougaloo's commitment to advancing equity and impact through science.
The strategic alignment with institutional resources and external grant funding will broaden the program's reach and long-term sustainability. Tougaloo College's emerging AI/ML capacity, intersectoral research infrastructure, and enduring legacy of social justice create fertile ground for this bold initiative. The Biomedical Research and Innovation Scholars Program concretizes the College at the confluence of scientific discovery, technological advancement, and public purpose—an ideal platform for partners seeking to create measurable, enduring change in the health and prosperity of underserved communities.
Biomedical Research & Training Center
The Tougaloo College Biomedical Research & Training Center (TCBRTC) will be the College’s first facility dedicated entirely to research. With a focus on chronic diseases that drive health disparities, the Center enhances institution-wide research programs and deepens collaborations with research-intensive partners.
Tougaloo has been awarded an $8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through the Research Facilities Construction Grants program to establish the Center. This state-of-the-art building will serve as a vital hub for students and researchers, expanding biomedical research capacity while preparing the next generation of leaders in science and medicine.
The project is directed by Dr. Josiah J. Sampson III, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, in collaboration with the Tougaloo College Research and Development Fund and other campus and community partners.
