Ways to Invest

Endowments

An endowment is a lasting gift where the principal remains intact, and only earnings are used to support specified purposes.

Naming Opportunities

Make a permanent mark through naming opportunities including academic buildings, scholarships, programs, and more.

Donor-Sponsored Scholarships

These scholarships align donor support with student achievement, leadership, and financial need.

Endowments

An endowment is a gift of money or other assets received for a purpose where the donor, grantor, or source has specified that the corpus or principal shall be preserved, utilizing only the interest and earnings for the stated purpose.

Endowment funds are held in trust in perpetuity by Tougaloo College and professionally managed to generate a reasonable level of income to meet the current needs of the endowed project supported by the invested funds. Accounts for the endowment funds are invested, allowing the income and principal to grow over time.

Minimum requirements to establish endowments: $1.5 million for an endowed chair, $1 million for an endowed professorship, and $50,000 for an endowed scholarship, all of which are payable within a five-year period.

Dr. Jinghe Mao

We are thrilled about the Michael A. Reddix, MD, MPH Endowed Chair Fund, which will inspire students to pursue careers in medicine and science while equipping them to tackle pressing global challenges. This endowment is an investment in the future, shaping the next generation of leaders.

Naming Opportunities

Naming opportunities at Tougaloo College offer a meaningful way for donors to make a permanent mark on the institution's legacy. Through significant philanthropic commitments, individuals, families, foundations, and corporations can associate their name—or that of a loved one—with academic programs, physical spaces, scholarship funds, or endowed initiatives that reflect their values and vision.

Naming opportunities are guided by institutional policies that ensure alignment with strategic priorities and appropriate levels of gift support. Examples of naming opportunities include:

  • Academic buildings, classrooms, labs, and centers
  • Endowed scholarships, professorships, and chairs
  • Lecture series, signature programs, or leadership academies
  • Outdoor spaces, performance venues, or residence halls

Each naming opportunity is developed in collaboration with donors to ensure a shared understanding of impact, recognition, and permanence. Gift levels are subject to board approval and consider both the visibility and long-term impact of the opportunity.

Donor-Sponsored Scholarships

Scholarship Student

The Donor-Sponsored Scholarship Program at Tougaloo College exists to bridge opportunity with philanthropy—empowering students by aligning donor support with academic achievement, leadership, and financial need. These scholarships are made possible by our generous donors, whose donations make a Tougaloo education possible.

Justin Gilbert

“Scholarships made Tougaloo possible for me. With support, I have grown as a musician, expanded my knowledge each semester, and become involved in campus life. As a member of the Concert Choir and Jazz Ensemble, I am preparing for my future as a versatile music composer. These scholarships have truly been a blessing.”

— Justin Gilbert
Junior, Music Major

Each year, hundreds of students benefit from Donor-Sponsored Scholarships, allowing them to pursue their academic and professional goals without the weight of financial barriers. In return, our donors receive personalized stewardship, including student thank-you letters, annual fund reports, and invitations to recognition events such as the annual Scholarship Celebration.

Scholarships funded from private donor funds are administered by the Division of Institutional Advancement and have a specific purpose. These purposes may include support for students in particular majors, from certain geographic regions, with demonstrated leadership potential, or with financial need as defined by the College’s Office of Financial Aid. Awards may be renewable or one-time and are provided in accordance with donor preferences and Tougaloo College’s scholarship administration policies. Minimum requirements to establish an annual scholarship are $2,500, which is payable by March 15 of each academic year; except for a book scholarship, which can be established at any amount.
