A Story of Love, Legacy, and Education
The history of Rice Hall is a beautiful testament to how education creates lasting bonds across generations and how gratitude can transform into generosity that benefits countless students.
Rice Hall was originally constructed in 2001 as "New Women's Hall," representing the College's commitment to providing modern, comfortable housing facilities for students. For over two decades, it served as the premier residential facility on campus, providing a home for thousands of students with its state-of-the-art amenities.
In Summer 2024, the hall was officially renamed Rice Hall following a transformational $1 million donation by Carrie Lapsky Davis, made in memory of her beloved grandmother who supported her education at Tougaloo College.
A Grandmother's Legacy
The renaming of this hall tells a powerful story of educational legacy. Carrie Lapsky Davis, a Tougaloo College alumna, expressed her enduring gratitude for her alma mater by making a transformational $1 million donation in memory of her grandmother, Carrie Ellen Rice. This generous gift honors the woman who supported Davis's educational journey at Tougaloo, demonstrating how the impact of education extends far beyond graduation and can inspire giving that benefits future generations of students. This legacy represents the profound connection between past, present, and future that defines the Tougaloo experience.
