Building Evacuation Overview
Building evacuation procedures are critical safety protocols designed to ensure the swift and safe exit of all occupants during emergency situations. These procedures apply to all buildings on campus and must be followed by all students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Critical Safety Notice
DO NOT re-enter any building until an all-clear is given by Campus Security or properly identified emergency personnel.
Every department should have a specific pre-determined assembly area where employees, students, and visitors should meet to check in with the building captain and supervisor. Missing persons must be reported immediately to Campus Security or emergency response personnel.
Primary Evacuation Steps
Evacuate building using the nearest exit; or alternate exit if nearest exit is blocked or unsafe.
- Secure any hazardous materials or equipment before leaving.
- Provide assistance to persons with disabilities or special needs.
- Evacuate at least 250 feet from buildings.
- Designate an evacuation assembly point.

General Building Evacuation
If a building evacuation occurs, every department should have a specific pre-determined area where employees, students, and visitors should meet to check in with the building captain and supervisor. The Office of Campus Security or other emergency response personnel should be notified of missing persons so that a search can be made. Some emergency may require building evacuation In this event:
- Fire alarms, verbal notice, email or telephone contact will USUALLY be used to sound the evacuation.
- Safely stop your work. Remain calm and orderly.
- Gather your personal belongings quickly since it may be hours before you are allowed back into the building.
- Seek out and give assistance to disabled or injured people in the area.
- If safe to do so, close doors and windows, but do not lock them.
- Never block stairwell doors.
- If time permits, turn off the power to all electrical equipment.
- Walk quickly, but do not run to the nearest safe exit via the stairway. NEVER USE ELEVATORS.
- Follow instructions from building captains, Campus Security or other properly identified emergency personnel.
- Go to your pre-determined Emergency Assembly Area and report to your supervisor so an account for everyone can be initiated.
- Keep all roadways and walkways clear for emergency vehicles.
- NEVER RE-ENTER ANY BUILDING until instructed to do so by Campus Security or other properly identified emergency personnel.
Emergency Evacuation of Persons With Limited Mobility and Special Needs
Assistance Guidelines
If you have a person with special needs, know your limitations in assisting this individual. Ask questions about their condition or conditions so you can better evaluate your ability for removing the person from the area of emergency. Ask for assistance if needed.
Mobility Assistance
Help individuals with mobility devices navigate to safety. Use evacuation chairs if available and trained to do so.
Vision Assistance
Guide individuals with vision impairments by offering your arm and describing the path ahead.
Hearing Assistance
Use visual signals and written communication to alert individuals with hearing impairments.
General Support
Stay calm, assess the situation, and provide reassurance while helping others reach safety.
Remember: Everyone Matters
No one should be left behind during an evacuation. If you cannot safely assist someone, immediately notify emergency personnel of their location.
Emergency Contact During Evacuations
Report all building emergencies requiring evacuation immediately. Provide your location, nature of emergency, and any injuries.
