The mission of the Office of Residential Life is to provide a high-quality residential living experience and to promote a co-curricular, living-learning environment for Tougaloo College residents. Concerned with all aspects of campus living, the department achieves its mission by providing an opportunity for group living, academic achievement, and social maturation in a democratic and diverse community. The department supports the principle of initiative, which acknowledges that students must accept personal responsibility for their development.

Discover Four Distinct Living Communities

The residence halls provide an opportunity for group living, academic achievement and social adjustment. The degree to which a student benefits depends on his/her participation in the planning and implementation of activities and his/her acceptance of personal responsibility for growth and development.
There are four residence halls on the historic Tougaloo College campus for all students, new and returning. Some areas of housing are specified by classification and special initiatives. Housing assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis.

Freshman FAQs

Where would I live?
All new first year male students will live in Berkshire A. All new first year female students will live in Renner Hall.
How do I connect to Wifi?
Once you arrive on campus, please join our FreedomSummer or EagleNest network. If you would like to join our TNet2 network, please register your device in the Office of Information Technology.
What if I want to make a room change?
Room changes must be approved by the Hall Coordinator and coordinated through the main office. Students must submit a room change form during the room adjustment and consolidation period, which is typically during the last full week of the first month of each semester. After the room change period ends, room changes will be granted only if there are extenuating circumstances. An unauthorized move will result in a $50 penalty and the resident must move back to the proper room assignment.
There is something wrong with my room. How do I submit a work order?
See your RA or Hall Coordinator. Our staff will report your issue to Facilities Management.
Are private rooms available?
We do not offer private rooms to new students. Returning students can make a request during Spring room selection. Based on our availability, we will honor those requests made by returning students in the order we received them.
What is a RA?
RA is short for Residence Assistant. RA is a trained peer leader who supervises those living in the residence hall. They provide leadership, assistance and support. If a resident has an issue, see your RA first. Hall Coordinators are full time, live-in staff employees that supervise RAs and the overall management of the residence hall.
What is done to resolve roommate conflict?
We encourage you to give your roommate a chance. As needed the Hall Coordinator will work with students to identify issues and help resolve conflict.
What happens if I lose my key?
The student has the responsibility for maintaining the security of his/her key always and at no time should the key be given to another person. In the event there is a need to replace a key, a $75.00 key replacement fee will be charged to the student’s account. This fee will replace all keys and the core of the lock to that room.
What are visitation hours?
Opposite sex visitation is a privilege for upper-class students only. Visitation is allowed Monday–Friday from 1pm–11pm and Saturday and Sunday from 5pm–11pm.
What is the mailing address for the residence halls?
Residents receiving special delivery, express, registered mail, etc., will be notified by a “package slip.” The student must pick up this special mail from the mail room. Identification will be needed for students who pick up their mail from the mail room. CASH SHOULD NOT BE SENT THROUGH THE MAIL. Mail received in the summer will be returned to sender if the student is not on campus. Students should have their address forwarded to a summer address at the end of the spring semester.

Resident Assistants

The Resident Assistant is one of the most helpful and resourceful persons that you will interact with at Tougaloo College. These individuals are responsible for providing leadership, assistance, and support to you and the other members of your floor or area. R.A.s' are selected because of their leadership potential, interpersonal ability, positive attitude, and sense of commitment. The R.A. is your primary resource for information and assistance with any type of concern. Their major responsibilities are: (1) getting to know each person in the unit, (2) familiarizing students with residence hall/suite and College rules and regulations, (3) assisting with the enforcement of these rules and regulations, (4) helping residents maintain an environment for learning, (5) acting as a liaison between resident students and the Residence Life Office, (6) facilitating student-to-student and student-to-staff interaction, (7) assisting in the development of educational programs, and (8) serving weekly desk duty hours and weekend duty rotations. Take advantage of your living situation and utilize your Resident Assistant.

Desk Assistants

Desk Assistants are students who are scheduled through the work-study program to monitor the front desk in each hall and serve in the main departmental office. They are responsible for checking guest into residence hall. They greet visitors, answer the telephone, file paperwork, run campus errands and perform various other duties as assigned.
