TOUGALOO COLLEGE RECEIVES $1 MILLION DONATION FROM
TIKTOK TO PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS PURSUING HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONS

Tougaloo, Miss., December 16, 2020 - A generous $1 million gift from the widely popular social networking platform, TikTok, will provide crucial scholarship support for Tougaloo College students pursuing public health careers.

The $1 million gift is part of TikTok’s global commitment to supporting the efforts of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tougaloo College is one of 10 institutions to receive funding through TikTok’s Health Heroes Relief Fund to support students seeking professions in public health, medical, and other healthcare fields.

“Healthcare workers are the heroes of the global pandemic, and deserving heroes within the TikTok community. The TikTok Health Heroes Relief Fund was created to support their efforts and we are honored to be able to continue our commitment to the healthcare community. We believe the next generation of health heroes should be reflective of the world around us and we are proud to support medical and health education programs that serve Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students." - Belinda Frazier, Head of Culture and Diversity, TikTok North America.

Tougaloo College offers Pre-Health Programs for those students who are interested in pursuing healthcare professions. In addition, the Owens Health and Wellness Center (OHWC) provides curriculum for health and wellness and community-based healthcare programs.

“This gift is the acknowledgment of TikTok’s commitment to public health and to helping Tougaloo train the next generation of public health care professionals who are passionate about health equity and social justice,” said Carmen J. Walters, Ph.D., president of Tougaloo College. “Providing scholarships for these exceptional scholars who desire to make an impact in the lives of others remains our top priority. This generous gift from TikTok helps us fulfill our mission of preparing underrepresented, culturally sensitive undergraduate students for public health careers and expands our cadre of partners committed to transforming lives.”
