Tougaloo, MS – Mississippi Association of Colleges and Universities (MAC) President Dr. Beverly W. Hogan will welcome about 200 university and college presidents, administrators and other distinguished guests to the 2018 Annual Conference at the Jackson Hilton September 30 - October 1, 2018. The conference theme for the one-day conference is Diversity and Equity in Higher Education: Answering the Call.
“Tougaloo College is honored to host this year’s conference,” Hogan said. “This is a timely opportunity for our colleges and universities to intentionally focus on this issue through broad lens; to examine implications and strategies we must employ to ensure we are providing the kind of campus culture, climate, spaces and support to ensure student success. We must communicate our campus values in our missions and strategic plans ensuring that they are cascaded throughout every level of our institutions," said President Hogan.
To kick off the conference, attendees will attend an opening reception at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum on Sunday evening. Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba will welcome conference attendees at the opening session on Monday morning. Institutions of Higher Learning Commissioner Dr. Alfred Rankins, Mississippi Association of Independent Colleges Executive Director Dr. E. Harold Fisher and Mississippi Community College Board Executive Director Dr. Amy Mayfield will provide local, state and national views on diversity, equity and inclusion, implications for higher education. American Council on Education President Dr. Ted Mitchell will speak during the plenary session and Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives, Honorable Philip Gunn, will speak during the Halbrook Award Luncheon. The closing session, held in Woodworth Chapel at Tougaloo College, will include a panel discussion on “Strategic Approaches to Diversity and Equity in Higher Education: Voices From the Field” by noted scholars Tougaloo College Center for International Studies and Global Change Director Dr. Loye Ashton, University of Mississippi Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Community Engagement Dr. Katrina Caldwell and University of Southern Mississippi Vice Provost for Diversity Dr. Amy Miller.
The purpose of MAC is to form a cohesive, working group of Mississippi’s higher education leaders, in an effort to solve issues facing the state.
