Tougaloo College to Honor Trailblazer in Women’s Sports: Professor Norma J. Williams

Tougaloo, MS — Tougaloo College will hold its Annual Athletic Fundraising Event on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at 6 p.m. to honor Professor Norma Jones Williams. The inspiration of the event centers around her dedication and standing legacy through her service to so many students and athletes.

With her unparalleled dedication and contribution to education and sports, Professor Williams served the College beginning in 1963, as an advisor in the areas of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. She taught Comprehensive Health and Physical Education courses as part of the General Education Program. Through her in depth knowledge, influence, and passion for physical activities, dance, fitness, sports and training, Professor Williams has elevated the teachings of the program tremendously.

“We are honored and grateful for the contributions of Professor Norma Jones Williams to this beloved College especially during a period of time when we needed them the most. The values and initiatives she instilled in our community will never be forgotten. More so, this fundraising event will allow us to further her legacy,” Dr. Carmen J. Walters, President of Tougaloo College said. This year women across different fields and industries celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX, which was established to protect people from discrimination, on the basis of sex, in any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

Professor Williams worked to promote physical activity and general health awareness to young students participating in various summer programs at the College. Responding to the needs of athletes to promote their sports, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), in partnership with Selected Institutions of Higher Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services sponsored the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) at Tougaloo College from 1979 to 2003. She also served in many administrative roles while at Tougaloo College. Professor Williams was selected to serve as Department Chair of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department from 2009 to 2015. She was also the first female African American to serve as Athletic Director of Men and Women Sports in the state of Mississippi.
