Tougaloo College President Dr. Carmen J. Walters is named among Mississippi’s Most Influential African Americans in 2022.
Each year an independent panel of business and community leaders selects outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions from different fields and categories. With the dozens of nominations received by Our Mississippi, only a select few will be part of the list.
Other honorees include:

· Billy Knight – Mayor, City of Moss Point, Mississippi
· Tim Lampkin – CEO, Higher Purpose Co., Clarksdale, MS
· Dr. Felicia M. Nave – President, Alcorn State University
· Dr. Vernon Rayford – Physician, North Mississippi Health Services, Tupelo, MS
· Nashlie Sephus – Tech Entrepreneur, CEO, Bean Path, Jackson, MS
· Dr. Justin Turner – Chief Medical Officer, Mississippi State Department of Health
· Charles D. Watson – Sr. VP, Network Operations, C Spire, Ridgeland, MS
Wesley Wells, the magazine publisher of Our Mississippi, said the group of individuals are outstanding in their professions and strong advocates and leaders in their respective communities. “They are great Mississippians that we can all be proud of. Congratulations to them all,” he added.
“I am truly honored and humbled that Our Mississippi has included me in this distinguished honor among other remarkable leaders in Mississippi, especially my presidential colleagues,” said President Dr. Carmen J. Walters. “This distinction recognizes these leaders’ contributions that have shaped and advanced their communities and fields, enriching the state of Mississippi. It also recognizes Tougaloo College, one of the state’s prestigious higher learning institutions,” Walters.
The Mississippi’s Most Influential African Americans of 2022-2023 will be honored at the 2023 Our Mississippi Honors Gala on March 25, 2023, at the Cadence Bank Conference Center in Tupelo, Mississippi.
