How to Help Someone in Crisis

Listen Without Judgment

Give the person your full attention. Let them express their feelings without trying to "fix" the situation immediately. Sometimes just being heard can provide immense relief.

Take It Seriously

Never dismiss someone's feelings or assume they're "just seeking attention." All expressions of distress should be taken seriously and treated with compassion.

Connect Them to Help

Encourage them to contact one of the resources listed above. Offer to stay with them while they make the call or help them find appropriate support.

Stay Connected

Follow up with the person. Let them know you care and are thinking about them. Continue to check in regularly and maintain supportive contact.

Warning Signs to Watch For

If you notice these signs in yourself or others, it may be time to seek help or encourage someone to reach out:

Emotional Warning Signs

  • Persistent sadness or hopelessness
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Overwhelming anxiety or panic attacks
  • Talking about death or suicide

Behavioral Warning Signs

  • Withdrawal from friends and activities
  • Dramatic changes in sleep or appetite
  • Decline in academic or work performance
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs
