Tougaloo College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Psychology, beginning as early as Fall 2025. The successful candidate will be responsible to the Psychology Department Chair of the School of Social Sciences and will provide responsible and professional instruction required in managing the day-to-day operational needs of the department, including preparing course materials, posting courses in the Canvas, evaluating students, mentoring students for teaching, research, and service activities. The candidate will also represent the Department of Psychology with on- and off-campus constituencies and maintain positive public relations with these groups. In addition, the faculty is encouraged to work with the department Chair to develop and participate in activities that support the department’s policy and procedures.
Responsibilities include teaching four undergraduate courses per semester (e.g. Child and Adolescent Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, History and Systems, Experimental or Psychology of Women), student advising, supervising students’ senior papers, preparing institutional effectiveness planning documents, serving the College through committee participation, and supporting departmental efforts for continued improvement of programs. Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring majority African American student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines.
Ph.D. in Psychology with some teaching experience at the collegiate or university level preferred. Area of specialization in Psychology is open. Applicants with ABD in the field will also be considered, however, the Ph.D. is required for tenure consideration. Candidate should possess excellent interpersonal skills and have a strong command of the SPSS program. Grant writing experience will be an asset. Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. The ability to work collaboratively and collegially with faculty and community members is essential. Documents needed are a forwarding letter, updated curriculum vita, copies of transcripts, sample syllabus of a taught course, and documents of teaching excellence, statement of teaching philosophy, and three current letters of reference that address teaching ability. An official transcript is required during interviews.
