Completed in 1994, this remarkable facility seamlessly integrates residential living with academic spaces. The center houses classrooms and the Humanities Division, while the residential wings provide distinct communities for freshman and upper-class male students. This unique design creates unparalleled opportunities for academic collaboration, peer mentorship, and scholarly engagement.

Find Berkshire Hall

Centrally located on Tougaloo College's campus, Berkshire Hall's unique Academic Living & Learning Center design places students at the heart of educational innovation.

A Phoenix Rising: From Tragedy to Triumph

The story of Berkshire Hall is one of resilience, renewal, and visionary thinking that transformed devastating loss into educational innovation.

The original Berkshire building was erected in 1894, beginning nearly a century of service to the Tougaloo College community. For 96 years, it stood as a testament to educational commitment and architectural heritage. However, in 1991, after 97 years of faithful service, the beloved original Berkshire was destroyed by fire. The loss devastated the campus community but also created an opportunity for innovative thinking about residential education.

Rising from the ashes, the new Berkshire Hall was completed in 1994, embodying the College's revolutionary "Academic Living and Learning Center" concept—the first of its kind on campus.

Honoring Our Heritage

While we celebrate the innovation of today's Berkshire Hall, we honor the memory of the original structure that served our community for nearly a century. The tragic fire of 1991 that claimed the 1894 building also sparked the visionary thinking that led to our current Academic Living and Learning Center. In this way, the legacy of the original Berkshire lives on, transformed into something even more impactful for student success.

The Heart of Innovation

Academic Living & Learning Center
