Thursday, April 17, 2014, the Secretary of Homeland Security, Mr. Jeh Johnson visited the Homeland Security’s Coastal Hazard Center of Excellence at Jackson State University. Mr. Johnson’s visit to Mississippi was at the invitation of Congressman Thompson. We received an invitation to participate and present information about the Disaster Coastal Studies (DCS) program of Tougaloo College. Three students, Alexander Hopkins, Anthony J. Saracino, and Ivy Alexander presented their recent research project: Using Geographical Information System to Create Custom Maps of Mississippi Coastal Disaster Impact Areas. The student project is supported by the DCS program and Dr. Santanu Banerjee is their advisor. The students did an excellent job and both, Congressman Thompson and Secretary Johnson were quite impressed with the Tougaloo student presentation. Attached are some pictures from the event.
