October 1, 1007 – October 5, 2007

This week I helped with the design of the website.  Since I was experienced in Macromedia Dreamweaver, I was able to assist with functions of the software.

October 8, 2007 – October 12, 2007

This week I participated in the ArcGIS training.  I have taken the course before, but I used this opportunity to refresh my memory on how to use the data layers and map out information.  I also did a literature review.

October 15, 2007 – October 19, 2007

This week, I found a data layer on the MARIS website that contained all churches in Mississippi.  I had trouble downloading at first, but it eventually came through.  Also, I had an issue with displaying the data layer, but I found some instructions and got over this hurdle as well.  I am going to compare the churches in this data set to the churches I manually typed into a database.  This will give an indication of what information may be incorrect.

October 22, 2007 – October 26, 2007

This week, I continued to help Vanesha with the website.  We started finalizing the look of all the pages.

November 5, 2007 – November 9, 2007

On the 6th, the team continued to work on the website.  On the 8th of this week, there was a GIS training module.

November 12, 2007 – November 16, 2007

On the 13th, Dr. Kamal came to speak with us on the proper steps of socioeconomic research.  We went through the scientific method and he gave us tips on how to make a valid and reliable survey.  On the 15th, the project team worked in ArcMap and ArcCatalog on projections.  Projections are important because I may have to convert one layer’s coordinate system to another layer’s coordinate system for consistency.  Different projections can distort a map, causing distances to be inaccurate.

November 19, 2007 – November 23, 2007

THANKSGIVING BREAK

November 26, 2007 – November 30, 2007

On the 27th, we talked to IT about hosting our website on the server.  We had the following questions to answer in this setting:

1)      Can we upload directly?

2)      Can we upload by page?

3)      Who is the contact person?

4)      Web server info

5)      How much space do we have on the server?

6)      Can we upload our own info to the server?

7)      How often are back-ups?

8)      What is the approval process?

9)      Can we use our own server to host the website?

On the 29th, the project team listened and gave feedback to Tonya on her survey questions.

Today I attempted to get a copy of the website CD from Mr. Barry Barnes from IT.  The CD has the updated website on it.  It is important that I manage all of the changes strategically so that there is no loss data or stale data.  I also researched the SPSS software.  SPSS is a statistical software package that is used to analyze data.  I receive my assignments for the week.  My tentative schedule for the week is:

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Today, I made updates to the Katrina Effect website.  I received an updated copy of the website CD.  I uploaded the November summaries for each member of the group.  I then burned a copy of the website to the CD so that it is backed up.

Today, I collaborated with Tonya and Tylor to update the research survey.  We wanted to make sure that the survey questions were in line with the hypothesis of our project.  I gave a copy of the updated website to the webmaster at Tougaloo.  I learned about Visio software to create a research timeline. I discussed ways to update the website such as putting links on it to websites like FEMA.  We took a group picture and individual pictures to update the website.

Thursday, January 31, 2008

Today, I made updates to the website. I added the individual researcher’s pictures and made proper alignments to them.  I was given a copy of MS Project Tutorial presentations so that we can build our project, track the progress, and communicate more efficiently.  I collaborated with Tylor and Tonya about the format of their summaries.  The next time we meet I will need to update the website with Tylor’s picture, Ms. Streetor’s picture, and the group picture.  I will also update Tonya’s summary in one file.

Mrs. Streeter and Tyler worked on the Geocode with the ArcMap software.  They matched the addresses of the churches to make sure the data was accurate.  I came up with new ideas for the website.  I want to add the CRA-W logo.  I also want to add links to the CRA-W (cra.org), MRO-W,NSF (nsf.gov),and the Tougaloo home page.  The next time we meet I would like to add updates of the GIS, progress, and survey results.
