Under the visionary and dynamic leadership of President Beverly W. Hogan, Tougaloo College made a commitment to support and encourage research among its faculty and students. In the Spring semester of 2002, the president established the Tougaloo Council for Undergraduate Research (TCUR). The goals of TCUR are to integrate research and technology across disciplines, and to build local, regional and national research programs so that students have opportunities to engage in integrated research projects. TCUR encourages all students to participate in research projects, especially senior level students, who are encouraged to submit their senior papers for presentation at the annual TCUR symposium. In addition, the faculty is requested to provide students with hands-on, challenging research experiences in order to stimulate the students’ interests in their respective disciplines. This is done to encourage students to become self-directed in their endeavors. TCUR wants to build a research program and to develop, extend, and strengthen Tougaloo College’s commitment to undergraduate research in order to facilitate students’ interest in future professional opportunities. It is hoped that seniors will continue to discuss their research in public forums and to participate in sponsored research projects, workshops, and professional conferences.
The four goals of the TCUR are to:
- Provide students with hands-on, challenging research experiences to stimulate interest in their respective chosen disciplines
- Build local, regional, and national research programs so that the students have opportunities to engage in integrated research projects with Tougaloo mentors serving as facilitators who encourage students to become self-directed in their scholarly undertakings
- Offer research programs and activities that encourage and facilitate students’ interests in future professional opportunities
- Develop, extend, and strengthen Tougaloo College’s commitment to research and highlight the critical need to address the nation’s undergraduate and graduate research shortage
The overall focus of the TCUR is to incorporate undergraduate research at the local, regional and national levels. The outcome is in alignment with national groups, such as the National Conferences of Undergraduate Research (NCUR) that strive to assist faculty and others to understand and appreciate the goals, methods and results of diverse areas of inquiry and knowledge.
