Professors Mao and Hennington in Biology and Rajnarayanan in Chemistry are active in grant-supported research in which Biology majors can participate. Each of these three professors typically has one to three students participating a semester. These students give presentations on their research at national conferences such as the ABRCMS conference. The Biology department has a 5 year MFGN/INBRE grant of approximately 1.4 million dollars a year. In addition, the Biology and Chemistry departments have just been given a 3.7 million dollar RIMI (Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions) grant that will fund additional faculty and student research.
Many other Biology majors apply and are accepted to do summer research at institutions all over the country, and even outside of the country. The summer research experience often leads to admission to graduate school.
