Honor Societies

Alpha Chi National Honor Scholarship Society is a coeducational society whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. The Mississippi Epsilon Chapter was chartered in 1996. Membership is open from all academic disciplines to any Tougaloo student at the junior or senior level with a cumulative grade point average of 3.70.

Alpha Kappa Delta, an international sociology honor society, was chartered in 1985. The purpose of the society is to stimulate high levels of scholarship through the exchange of ideas. Membership is open to any Tougaloo sociology major at the junior (third year) level who has a cumulative 3.00 grade point average prior to initiation. An initiation fee is required, entitling the student to a lifetime membership in the society and a one-year subscription to Sociological Inquiry.

Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, Alpha Rho Chapter, was chartered at Tougaloo College in 1954. The purpose of the society is to promote high scholarship; to encourage sincere endeavor in all fields of knowledge and service; to cultivate a high order of personal living; and to develop an appreciation for scholarly work and scholarly endeavor in others. To be eligible for membership a student must be a junior or senior and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30.

Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society was chartered at Tougaloo College in 1982. The purpose of the society is to encourage superior scholastic achievement among students in their first year in institutions of higher education; to promote intelligent living and a continued high standard of learning; and to assist women and men in recognizing and developing meaningful goals for their roles in society. To be eligible for membership, a student must have earned a 3.50 grade point average for the first term while carrying a full-time academic load (12-15 hours or more).

Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, Omega Phi Chapter, was chartered at Tougaloo College in 1978. The purpose of the fraternity is to develop leadership; to promote friendship; and to provide service to the community and the country. Young men must be of at least second semester first year standing and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.25.

Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, Chi Xi Chapter, was chartered at Tougaloo College in 1996. The purpose of the society is to recognize scholarship and excellence in education, and promote the development and dissemination of worthy ideas and practices.

Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society began in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University, and now boasts 750 active chapters in Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States. Tougaloo College's chapter, Alpha Delta Alpha, was chartered in 1992. Sigma Tau Delta promotes exemplary achievement in the field of English as well as promotes cultural activities celebrating the study of language and literatures. Prospective members must earn a 3.0 in the English major; however, members of outside disciplines are welcome as associate members provided they meet certain requirements.
