General Project Description
Almost two years after Hurricane Katrina, faith-based organizations and community groups continue to provide relief and essential services to those affected by the disaster. Much media attention is given to larger charitable organizations such as the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities, however many smaller groups and individuals have traditionally been overlooked. Although there are many areas of research possible with studying the effect of Hurricane Katrina, this project will seek to address only the impact of faith-based organizations on evacuees in the Jackson Metro area. This project will map the evacuee demographics, the number and location of evacuees served by faith-based organizations, the location of evacuees over time, the financial support received by evacuees, and attitudinal data collected through surveys concerning the quality of services received during and after the disaster.
