The Honorable Robert George Clark, Jr.

Citation for the degree, Doctor of Humane Letters
"Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope."

Such has been the life of Robert George Clark, Jr., public servant extraordinaire.  With sincere appreciation for his relentless service in the Mississippi House of Representatives and his exemplary commitment to education, Tougaloo College is pleased to confer upon Robert George Clark, the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.  

Every time we speak of dignity, of unity, of empowerment, we fortify the foundation and resources of boundless frontiers, the challenges of our future.  By all means, when we utilize these concepts to touch and shape the lives of our youth, we embellish humankind.  This has been the spirit behind the efforts of Representative Robert George Clark, Jr., who recognizes that keeping a watchful eye on the crop is essential to reaping a rich harvest, of world class citizens and visionary, competent and dynamic leaders.  This gentle man has unselfishly reached back to strengthen the quality of life for many others.

A practitioner of strong values, he demonstrates his commitment to youth as a proud and hard working father, husband, mentor, civic and community leader and public servant. Through the development of countless opportunities, networking and continuous encouragement, he has opened doors and chartered the course of numerous men and women. 

In the midst of seemingly insurmountable obstacles including discrimination, Representative Robert George Clark, Jr., was able to successfully bring change to educational laws in Mississippi, thus, bringing hope to the hopeless.  He has looked beyond himself, he has given without expectation of fanfare---he is the perfect example of a quiet hero. 

For garnering tremendous support to help the people of Mississippi achieve their educational and social needs, for your inspiration, honesty and fearless courage to uplift and heal our neighborhoods, and for making a significant investment in the welfare of future generations, Tougaloo College proudly confers upon Robert George Clark, Jr., pioneer public servant, prominent lawmaker and consummate educator, on the occasion of its 133rd Commencement Exercises, the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
