Overview of the HSI Student Internship Program
Tougaloo College’s Homeland Security Initiatives (HSI) Program provides an orientation session at the beginning of each intern placement year, and brings all interns together at least twice during their assignment periods for seminars on a range of topics which enhance the internship experiences (via teleconference and webcasts).
Our students seek opportunities to gain valuable work experience to supplement academic coursework. Employers seeking to diversify the permanent workforce talent recruit and offer meaningful intern experiences cannot afford to by-pass Tougaloo College!
Application Requirements
Preference is given to students enrolled in an undergraduate or special topic program with an emphasis in homeland security or related studies (i.e., a major, minor, or coursework leading to a certificate). A grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale is preferred. HSI sponsored internships require U.S. citizenship and in most instances, a security clearance which is initiated by the
host organization at no cost to the student.
Housing: Housing is provided on an "as needed" basis. All applicants requesting housing are identified in the application material (i.e., interns accepting assignment out of state). Tougaloo College assists with temporary housing referrals; however, Tougaloo College does not provide or guarantee housing.
Local Travel Subsidy – Out of State Placement: Student interns usually receive an additional allowance to subsidize daily travel to and from their intern work assignment when out of state (i.e., subway fare card). *Please Note: The salary amount shown is approximate and may be different depending on geographic location, organization in which placed or other factors, i.e., Federal, state, local, private industry.
Application requirements are as follows:

• Complete Application

Selection Process
In conjunction with host (employer) agencies, the Tougaloo College HSI Intern Coordinator reviews applications to ensure that candidates meet program eligibility requirements and that application material are complete.
Applications are matched with available internships descriptions (work order or position description) and with consideration of academic discipline and interest.
Employers are notified of potential matches, provided application materials, and information is exchanged to promote timely interview and selection.
The HSI Coordinator refers applications to employing agencies based on the academic disciplines they are seeking. Employing agencies review the applications, conduct interviews if necessary, and make all final selections.
Students selected for the internship program are notified with an official internship offer and date to attend pre-assignment orientation at Tougaloo College.
