Biography
Barbara R. Powell received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Tougaloo College. She obtained
a Masters of Combined Science Degree in the areas of Biology and Chemistry at Mississippi College. As
an educator for the last 30 years, she has primarily taught Physical Science and Introductory Chemistry
at Alcorn State and Jackson State Universities. Prior to retirement from Jackson State in 2002, she also
served in an administrative capacity as Coordinator of the Center of Excellence in Research, Teaching
& Learning (CERTL) funded by the National Science Foundation, as well as Intervention & Retention
Coordinator for the College of Science, Engineering & Technology.
In addition, Professor Powell has been cited several times throughout her career in Who’s Who
Among Teachers, has served as a panelist for the National Science Foundation, presenter for national
conferences, selected as Star Teacher and Distinguished Faculty.
Since coming to Tougaloo College, Professor Powell has served as staff/faculty in the Natural Science
Division, CAR program and Student Academic Success Center. She continues to serve the institution as
Science Success Center Director and HBCU-UP Program Manager.
