Supplemental Laboratories


Math Center 
The College provides support for students who are taking courses in the sciences and mathematics to improve their chances for success in their coursework.  Through the Center students and faculty provide tutorial services and special workshops to supplement instruction in all areas of science and math, with special emphasis on freshman level courses. The Center, located in Kincheloe Hall, is equipped with state-of-the-art computers and audio-visual aids which help students to visualize and experiment with concepts covered in class.

Reading Center
The Reading Center, located in Holmes Hall, is designed to provide direct and supplemental instruction to aid students and the campus community in reading a variety of material, with discrimination and pleasure at different degrees and levels. The primary goal of the Center is to assist faculty and students in addressing the Expected Student Outcomes particularly those stating:

  • Tougaloo graduates should be able to communicate verbally and nonverbally in a variety of modes
  • Tougaloo graduates should be able to acquire and process information
  • Tougaloo graduates should be able to organize, comprehend and make practical use of a wide variety of materials from the sciences to the arts

A secondary goal of the Center is to provide services to the faculty and staff.  These services include collaborative training, workshops and technological aid for professional development. Students enrolled in reading classes are required to attend reading laboratory sessions.  Faculty may require students enrolled in other classes to attend sessions.  Individuals have the option of using the Reading Center to enhance their reading skills.

World Language Research and Study Center
The Center, located in Holmes Hall, is available to students studying modern languages.  It is equipped with computers for language research and the use of interactive language software. The Center also provides satellite television programming for French and Spanish and is a resource center for videos, CDs and cassettes.  A lab supervisor, lab assistants and members of the Modern Language Unit are available to provide assistance for those who use the lab. 

Writing Center
The Writing Center, located in Berkshire Hall, assists students who need or desire individual help in improving their writing skills.  The Center is prepared to help students write papers for their English, speech, history, health or other classes. Students my also receive help in preparing for the College English Proficiency Examination.
