Upward Bound Program
June 5th - July 15th, 2011
The Upward Bound program will conduct a (6) six-week residential program from June 5th, 2011 through July 15, 2011. One hundred eighty (180) students are admitted to the summer program. During this phase, students live on the campus of Tougaloo College and activities include academic classes, special interest classes, cultural enrichment activities, recreational activities, counseling and tutoring.
Participants must have an academic need; fall within the economic or first generation guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Education and meet other specific program requirements. Participants must be at least 13 and entering the 9th and 10th grade during the 2009 Academic Year in order to be accepted into the program. Tougaloo College’s Upward Bound I provide services to participants from the following high schools: South Leake, Canton, Bailey Magnet, Lanier, Jim Hill, Velma Jackson, Murrah, Forest Hill, Callaway, Ridgeland, Wingfield, and Provine. Upward Bound II provides services to O’Bannon, Yazoo City, South Delta and Hollandale Simmons high schools.
Upward Bound Math & Science
June 5th - July 15th, 2011
The Upward Bound Math & Science Center will conduct a six- week (6) residential program from June 5th, 2011 through July 15, 2011. The program is a federally funded pre-college enrichment program designed to generate skills and motivation in the math and science area for success in education beyond high school. The summer program concentrates on high school students who will be enrolled in either the 9th and 10th grade in the 2009 Academic Year, have an academic need, must fall either within the economic or first generation guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Education, desire to attend a post-secondary institution and would like to major in a math and/or science related discipline. Fifty (50) students are admitted for the summer during six week residential programs. Students are selected from the following target schools and must meet the eligibility requirements: Canton, Crystal Springs, Lanier, Mendenhall, O’Bannon, Provine, Hollandale Simmons, Velma Jackson, South Leake, South Delta and Yazoo City. Students who are accepted to the summer program will participate in a research component where they will gain exposure to the research process and its techniques. Also, they will be enrolled in math, science, English, foreign language, and computer classes.
Educational Talent Search
June 5th - July 8th, 2011
The Educational Talent Search program summer enrichment camp will begin on June 5th, 2011 through July 8th, 2011. The camp is free and will include fifty (50) students from grades sixth (6th) through eighth (8th) from Blackburn, Hardy, Nichols, and Northwest Jackson Middle Schools.
The program is federally funded through the United States Department of Education in which youth are identified with potential for completion of high school education and encouraged to enter into post-secondary. The summer enrichment camp allows participants to enhance their math, reading, and science skills, as well as offer exposure to the social aspects of life.
