Leadership Institute

“Where there is no leadership, society stands still.  Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” - Harry S. Truman

The Tougaloo College Leadership Institute is committed to developing a new breed of leadership. The first initiative of the Leadership Institute is the Delta Leadership Initiative, which addresses the existence of socioeconomic disparities in the Mississippi  Delta.  The Delta Leadership Initiative is funded through a congressionally appropriated program administered through the U.S. Department of Education.

This Initiative benefits the citizens of the northern, central and southern segments of the Mississippi Delta and operates from the historic campus of Tougaloo College.  The primary counties serviced are: Bolivar, Humphreys, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie and Washington.

The Initiative is implemented through use of seminars and workshops addressing disparities in five areas: business development, education, health, housing and technology.  The leaders are provided training in leadership development, motivation, problem solving and communication, to name a few.  Based upon the outcomes of the sessions, strategic plans are developed to provide solutions to the disparities and identify and secure funding to adequately address the problems.

Prospective participants are invited to complete an application, and then selected through a screening process.  Participants must agree to commit to an 8-month, 2-day weekend residential program in Jackson, Mississippi.  Meals are provided and program participants receive a small stipend for travel.  The training is held on the campus of Tougaloo College once a month and consists of a class of approximately 30 grass root leaders per session.  Participants must currently reside in Bolivar, Humphreys, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie or Washington counties.   A certificate of completion will be provided to those participants.
