Comprehensive Academic Resources Program

The Comprehensive Academic Resources Program is for first-year and transfer students. It offers a wide range of educational experiences designed to assist students in making a smooth transition from high school to college.  Faculty serve as academic advisors, mentors and instructors, sharing their ideas, talents, and service beyond the classroom. The faculty are assigned to major departments and serve as liaisons to the Comprehensive Academic Resources Program. Students must enroll in MI 101: Mission Involvement for the fall semester and MI 102: Mission Involvement  for the spring semester.

The Comprehensive Academic Resources Program transitions students from high school academics to college academics using the following support services to effectively bridge the transitional period.

Five-Major Programs provide first-year students an opportunity to showcase their talents and educational achievements. These programs are indicated as follows:

  • Induction Ceremony moves students from a period of orientation to young eaglets ready to begin life as a college student, after hearing a motivational speech from a Tougaloo graduate.
  • Freshman Showcase allows students to present or introduce to Tougaloo College their many talents from dramatic presentations to interpretive dance.
  • Freshman Honors present certificates to students earning 3.00 to 4.00 and medallions to students earning 4.00 for the first semester. On this occasion, students get to meet previous graduates of a college who are professionally engaged from the law field to the medical field.
  • Alpha Lambda Delta inducts freshman students who have earned 3.5 and above while enrolled in 12 hours or more of college courses.
  • The Rite of Passage moves freshman students to divisions/departments of their chosen majors. Freshman students earn the rights to pass from the freshman status (no major) to sophomore status (declared major or undecided). Students are presented to each division, according to the chosen major, in this ceremonial activity.

Wednesday Assemblies provide students with a view of the internal systems within the college from Academic Affairs to Religious Emphasis. These Chapel services highlight important information for sustaining the legacy, providing historical knowledge, and connecting to the Tougaloo spirit of academic excellence.

Friday Forums provide information regarding financial, academic support, personal support and personal resources to aid students academically, emotionally, and financially as they transition into a stabilized college life. These forums are group interactive, as well as individual hands-on.

Mission: Involvement engages young minds into thinking about your Learning Style and the Discovery Wheel, a valuable assessment for your special abilities, especially your intellectualism. Becoming A Master Student by Dave Ellis prepares you to enter your sophomore year fully ready and able to explore the world of academia through the Four Modes of Learning (Why?, What?, How? and What if?), Note Taking strategies and understanding your goals, attitude and the importance of a good support system.

Reading/Study Skills allows you to fully develop your reading comprehension skills. This is done by reflecting, engaging, and assessing your knowledge of vocabulary, main ideas, understanding literary devices and graphics, and author's thought patterns, as well as becoming a prolific writer though your literary responses.

Labs provide support in Reading, Writing, Math and Foreign Language. These labs are part of the courses: English, Reading, Math and Language offered to freshmen. Although the services are provided for students enrolled in the course, the Reading Lab can be used by students who have completed the requirements or who need support for a specific content area, especially since WordSmart and Progressive Reader are included.

Important Resources help you to transition comfortably into college life. You are now "On Your Own" for many things, but you are never alone at Tougaloo College.

  • First, you have your Mission: Involvement Professor. Your M.I. professor is an invaluable resource, advisor and instructor. For many of your day-to-day academic problems and not-so-academic problems, your M.I. professor can steer you in the right direction. Get to know that person and allow that person to know you. Your success in a rigorous environment depends on it.
  • Second, you have your Reading/Study Skills Professor. Your R/SS professor will work with you diligently, as you acquire the skills needed for rigorous academic work. Not only do you receive classroom work, but you participate in a one-hour lab reinforcement session.
  • Third, you have your professor for the other courses you will be taking. Your first responsibility is to make certain that professor knows your name. Your second responsibility is to make certain you ask questions, if you do not completely understand. Your third responsibility is to ask for a tutor or form a study group, before you get behind in the course. Your fourth responsibility is to use all available resources, manage your time, put your courses first and get your money's worth by being persistent about your learning.
  • Fourth, you have Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Center for Student Advising and Retention/One Stop Services. Get to know all of the valuable services they provide to help you toward your successful matriculation here at Tougaloo College.
